Tight Jeans

 Narrative

The short film lacks a clear narrative arc focusing on an idol conversation in a singular location with little to no forward driving action occurring.

Genre

At a surface level the short film is a clear comedy with the comedic beats of the film coming from the conversational dynamic between the three teenagers however more serious elements of social commentary are also disguised within the film.

Representation

The film places a direct focus on the young black youth of England/London emphasizing their more harmless and childish nature which contrasts with the stereotyped representation they have in the British media as dangerous or criminally orientated.

Editing

The Editing is fairly basic with it mainly being used for continuity when a closer shot of one of the teenagers is used or when an action match for what the group is looking at.

Mise en scene

Colored Hoodies - The use of three separate colors emphasizes the difference in character between the three of them with the use of vibrant colors emphasizing there equally vibrant personalities.

Trainers/air forces - Typically worn by a younger demographic the shoe illustrate the teenagers youthfulness and potential naivety while also being a synonymous part of black youth culture.

Tight Jeans - Serve as the catalysis for the main conversation and plot point for the narrative with the jeans being a symbol of the difference in culture between the two ethnicity's.

Colored vest - The green, red and yellow stripes of the vest visually match colors of several African countries flags such as Cameroon and Senegal emphasizing there pride in there ethnic history and culture.

Non diegetic rap beat (opening scene)  - A style of music typically produced by the black teen community its appearance in the opening scene establishes the central focus of the video.

Diegetic off screen females voice - Correlates to the sexual conversation the teenagers where discussing and acts as a punch line.

Diegetic slang and British accent - Establishes the location of the film and adds a further level of authenticity to the characters talking

Cinematography

Establishing shot - Establishes the location while simultaneously introduces the teenage trio.

Paning shot - Signifies the teenagers shift in focus visually panning the camera similarly to how they turned there heads.

Medium close up - Emphasizes the emotional response on the teenagers faces.
Inspiration

This short film has inspired me to use more nuance in the nature of my story telling potentially leaving a story open ended or just simply not making a conventional story arc.
