Over
Narrative:
Reverse chronological storytelling (Non linear) to slowly reveal the scenario of the film creating a sense of suspense and intrigue in the audience.
Genre:
The film doesn't feature any particular aspects that strongly link it to a typical mainstream film genre however the subject of a dead body and a mysterious dead person could potentially establish the short film as part of the crime genre. However it more heavily leans towards the documentary genre due to its on scene shooting, lack of dietetic music and it being based on a true story.
Representation:
The short film focuses on the representation of immigrants from war torn countries with his decision to hide in the landing gear emphasizing the severity of struggle and danger in his own country which led him to take such a dangerous risk to escape.
Editing:
The editing of the short film is extremely simple utilizing strait cuts with main thing of notoriety being the non linear reverse chronological placement of the footage.
Mise en scene:
Singular Bouquet of flowers - Emphasizes the absence of the mans love ones while simultaneously showing how quickly forgotten and insignificant the mans death was to the community.
Bloodied black sci mask - Featuring early in the short film before the cause of the mas death is known or reeled to the audience it potentially serves as an attempt at misdirection as the item of clothing is typically used by criminals implying that his death could of been as a result of gang activity or criminality it blood stained appearance also emphasizing the violent and brutal nature of his death.
Lighting - Dark opening shot contrasting with lighter conditions quickly serves as a metaphor for life/death and how quickly you can lose it.
Family Polaroid - Humanizes the previously faceless man causing the death to seem more tragic and impactful.
Exclusively Diegetic sounds - Grounds the short film in a strong sense of reality and seriousness emphasizing to the audience that this is not fiction but a real and tragic tail of a man who lost his life.
Short diegetic dialogue of couple in opening scene - Shows how insignificant and quickly forgotten the mans death was with the casual dialogue "It looked like some one died" followed by the line "we are late" emphasizing how faceless and and unknown he is alluding to the fact that his family and loved ones are a far way away from where he has died.
Residential street - The use of an unassuming common residential street as the singular and set location of the short film contrasts with the horrific nature of the mans death emphasizing the danger and risk the man endured in the hopes of living a living a life the resident consider normal and take for granted.
Performance:
The short film is mostly lacking on any individual characters that are given any amount of significance or screen time with the only lines of dialogue coming from the unknown couple in the opening scene of the short film. The casual tone of the couple in combination with there hurried dismissive walk to the house door demonstrates how little is remembered or known of the man who tragically died with this dialogue also conveying the premise of the short film to the audience by establishing that some one had died.
Cinematography:
The centrally framed medium shots of the deceased mans clothing establishes police involvement as it directly imitates police evidence photographs in addition to humanizing the unseen corpse and giving the viewer a vague idea of his appearance.
The use of close up shot of a water spray cleaning the blood of the road emphasizes the brutal and violent nature of his death in addition to showing how deaths such as his are almost normalized and given no attention or respect with the cleaner removing his blood stains as though they were graffiti or garbage.
The use of a Pov shot taken from the perspective of a police officer as they arrive on the screen contrasts with the still and distant cinematography present throughout the rest of the short film potentially representing the panic the appearance of the body has caused for the surrounding community.
Inspiration:
This short film has inspired me to approach my films narrative from a less conventional approach making the narrative or aim of the film unclear to the audience while also relying on subtle uses of mise en scene and performance to slowly build a narrative which can only be established at the end of the story through using non chronological story telling.
