Cambridge Diary - Generating ideas

Image
The spleen stealer:  Set in the present/modern day the short film is part of the horror/thrillergenre and follows a young drunk university kid making his way back to his university accommodation after a night out drinking at a pub returning alone in the empty streets of midnight Cambridge. Rising crime has appeared in the area with reports of missing people (this will be subtly conveyed through  props and details). As the kid stumbles carelessly through the street pov shots and creepy non diegetic music will be used to build suspense and imply to the audience that he is being stalked. This reaches a climax where a man dressed in a rabbit mascot costume appears a few feet in front of him at the end of the street he's walking down. The university kid continues to walk in a drunk fashion down the street initially taking humour in the funny nature of the costume before  halting in his stride noticing the subtle red stains that cover the white mascots costume. Now panicked he ...

Narrative: Reverse chronological storytelling (Non linear) to slowly reveal the scenario of the film creating a sense of suspense and intrigue in the audience.   Genre: The film doesn't feature any particular aspects that strongly link it to a typical mainstream film genre however the subject of a dead body and a mysterious dead person could potentially establish the short film as part of the crime genre. However it more heavily leans towards the documentary genre due to its on scene shooting, lack of dietetic music and it being based on a true story. Representation:  The short film focuses on the representation of immigrants from war torn countries  with his decision to hide in the landing gear emphasizing the severity of struggle and danger in his own country which led him to take such a dangerous risk to escape.  Editing: The editing of the short film is extremely simple utilizing strait cuts with main thing of notoriety being the non linear reverse ch...

The Fly

Image
Narrative The short film follows a typical linear narrative structure within its short time span. Its setting and premise is immediately established in the opening scene with the fast cuts between the driver, bank and fly with the fly's introduction establishing it as the problem/rising action of the film.  Genre: A lthough the film does feature some elements reminiscent and typical of the action/crime genre it is deliberately included as an element of comedic parody with the drivers heightened attention and rage in trying to catch the fly juxtaposing the serious nature of of the situation he is in with the elements of physical and slapstick comedy such as when the tooth pick goes through his mouth establishing it as a comedy. Representation:  The short film lacks any particular focus on a specific ethnic or societal group instead choosing to represent the broad spectrum of criminals choosing to present them as stupid and potentially inept with this being evident throug...

Ellington Kid

Image
Narrative: The film's narrative is nonlinear in fashion with the multiple cuts between the two friends talking in the shop and the supposed past events of the Boy being chased. The unclear nature as to whether the past event that is cut to actually happened or is just fiction also further establishes its nonlinear nature as it blurs the line between fact and fiction within the world of the film itself. Genre; The short films genre blurs the line between multiple different genres with the comedic and witty dialogue between the two friends in the shop suggesting it to be comedy however it also incorporates elements of the horror genre through the suggestion of what the cooks did with the body something which is emphasized through props such as the various knives and the ominous non diegetic music that is used throughout. The films topic and theme of Teen youth crime and violence also makes it part of the crime genre while also potentially serving as a subtle social commentary....
